Sylvia Plachy born in Budapest. As a young girl, she and her parents settled in the Unites States in 1958. They fled Hungary after the 1956 Revolution.
In her Junior year at Pratt Institute she was inspired to become a photographer. Between 1974-2004 she was staff photographer at the Village Voice Newspaper in New York during which time she covered life and culture in New York City with occasional travel outside the country. Her first book Unguided Tour was an album chosen from images from her column by the same name and it won the Infinity Award for best publication in 1990. Self Portrait with Cows Going Home won The Golden Light Award. Her other books are Red Light, Goings on About Town, Out of the Corner of My Eye and Signs and Relics.
Her awards include a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1977, Page One Award for Journalism from Columbia University, a Lucie, and the Dr. Erich Salomon Preis in 2009. Her photographs have been published in magazines, and have been exhibited in museums and galleries. She has a traveling exhibit in Europe called: When Will It Be Tomorrow.
Ms. Plachy lives in New York City with her husband. They have one son.
