Join us in the new South x Southeast Photo Gallery in Molena, Georgia, around FDR State Park and Pine Mountain, and on the grounds of Roosevelt’s Little White House for a 3 day iPhoneography workshop with Karen Klinedinst.

 

Discover the creative possibilities of capturing the landscape with your iPhone’s camera. The iPhone is ideal for landscape photography, because it allows you to both shoot and process your images on a light-weight device, unencumbered by a heavy camera. This workshop will open your eyes to the endless creative possibilities.

  • Explore iPhone-specific image capture techniques.

  • Learn how to fine-tune and edit your images directly on your iPhone or iPad.

  • Experiment with ways to process your landscapes in a direction that reflects your creative vision.

  • Print your iPhone/iPad images on luxurious fine art papers provided by Hahnemühle Fine Art Paper.

You’ll come away from this workshop with the knowledge you need to shoot, edit, and create beautiful landscapes entirely on your iPhone or iPad.

Workshop prerequisite: A working knowledge of your iPhone 6 or later. A list of apps that we will use will be emailed to you prior to the workshop.

 

Karen Klinedinst is a landscape photographer and graphic designer based in Baltimore, Maryland. Originally from central Pennsylvania, she spent much of her childhood painting and drawing the landscape around her. She graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore with a BFA in Graphic Design, and a love of photography. Throughout her professional career as a graphic designer she has maintained a fine art photography practice, focusing on place, nature, and the environment.
During a hiking trip in 2011 along Cornwall’s Southwest Coastal Path, she decided to leave her heavy Nikon at home and use her iPhone’s camera to document her journey. Since that trip, she has been using her iPhone and iPad exclusively to photograph and express the landscape. She creates landscapes influenced by 19th century Romanticism with 21st century technology.
Her landscape iPhoneography has been exhibited widely, including: Massoni Art Gallery, Adkins Arboretum, Maryland Art Place, Soho Photo Gallery, The Center for Fine Art Photography, Griffin Museum of Photography, and the Biggs Museum of American Art. Her work is in the collection of the National Park Service, and numerous private collections.
She was a 2004 Platte Clove artist-in-residence at the Catskills Center for Conservation and Development, and a 2006 National Park Service artist-in-residence at Acadia National Park in Maine. In 2015, was awarded an Individual Artist Award from the Maryland State Arts Council.

 

Workshop Schedule:

Thursday, April 6th:

Everyone arrives late afternoon at the SxSE Gallery to meet, discuss the agenda, answer questions. Dinner at the B&B 2 doors down the street.

Friday, April 7th:

Morning classroom instruction on image capture techniques at the gallery from 9-11, followed by shooting at Pine Mountain, FDR State Park, the Little White House. Picnic lunches. Early dinner at the B&B followed by projections of images from the day’s shooting at the gallery.

Saturday, April 8th:

Meet at the gallery for breakfast,  followed by classroom instruction on image editing and creative processing. You’ll then apply this new knowledge about post-processing to the images you shot the previous day. We’ll wrap up the workshop by printing your images on fine-art paper provided by Hahnemühle Fine Art Paper. Lunch on-site.

Brunch at the Gallery, last minute Q&A’s, and farewells.

Resurrection

Exhibition Statement:

The images in Resurrection explore the passage of time, memory, and renewal. As a photographer, the landscapes I create are informed by my love of walking. I walk in the mountains and parks every weekend, and through the city during the week. This daily act of walking allows me to carefully observe and feel the nuances of space, light, and passage of time.
During these walks, I photograph and express these landscapes using my iPhone’s camera. Using my iPhone gives me the ability to capture what I see unencumbered by a heavy camera. The image I capture is then processed and manipulated on my iPad to express my emotional response to the landscape. My work is not about capturing reality, but creating a neo-Romantic world reflective of my memory and imagination. -Karen Klinedinst
