Join award-winning photographer Alison Wright in this unique photographic workshop as she spends four days with students photographing ethnically diverse areas in and around Miami including South Beach, Wynwood Arts, and Little Havana as well as off-the-beaten-path gems.

Alison travels to all regions of the globe photographing traditional cultures and people while covering issues concerning the human condition. She has published ten books and was recently named a National Geographic Traveler of the year as someone who photographs with passion and purpose. Alison will share some of her stories and insights as to how she approaches people from all around the world and makes them feel comfortable in front of the camera- even when you don’t speak the same language. Learn how your camera can become a key into the lives of others and help create a universal human connection through an image.

 A few notes…

• If you would like your work reviewed by Alison on Saturday (included in workshop fee) please be prepared to bring your images or portfolio.

• Participants should be able and willing to immerse themselves in diverse communities and explore the unknown.

• Please be prepared for possible early morning/late evening shoots.

• Schedule is subject to change due to weather or other circumstances.

• Alison will be assisted by local Miami photographer Jesus Aranguren V.

Accommodations:

Group rates have been secured at the 4 star apartment hotel, The Metropole, South Beach, Miami Beach. Reservations must be made before January 19th!  The Metropole’s 1 and 2 bedroom apartments have full kitchens and, included in your room rate, a complimentary shuttle service to and from the Miami International Airport, complimentary cocktails from 7-8, and free wi-fi. Transportation:

Parking in Miami and around the hotel in Miami Beach is prohibitively expensive. If you plan on driving please read the information on parking on the Metropole Hotel’s website. Uber, Lyft and taxi cabs are plentiful and we plan to use those to move about the city and beachfront. Sharing a ride service from and to the hotel will be economical and easy.

Wednesday: Miami, Florida

Arrive Miami in time to check into The Metropole and meet for light fare and beverages at 5:30. Alison will give a talk at 7 pm about her new book, Human Tribe, followed by a book signing. Afterwards we will meet for a Welcome Dinner at a local restaurant.

Thursday: Little Havana, Wynwood Arts

We’ll start early, photographing scenic Little Havana and around the artsy Wynwood Area. After lunch we’ll have classroom time with Alison reviewing and critiquing as a group. Late afternoon we’ll hit the streets again, making some early evening images around South Beach and then meeting for dinner.

Friday: South Beach, private Boat Ride around the city

Photographing in groups with Alison and Jesus around South Beach and other locations. We’ll catch a private 3-hour boat ride in the late afternoon when the light starts to fade and the lights of the city start to come up. Biscayne Bay, Island Beaches, Brickell Downtown views.

Saturday: Portfolio Reviews, Classroom, late afternoon shooting, Farewell Dinner

If you’d like Alison to review your current portfolio or critique the work you’ve made during the workshop this is the day. Schedule an appointment when you sign up. Late afternoon photographing before we gather for a farewell dinner. Workshop ends after dinner.

Alison Wright, an editorial & documentary photographer, has spent a career capturing the universal human spirit through her photographs and writing. For many of her assignments Alison travels to all regions of the globe photographing traditional cultures and people while covering issues concerning the human condition. She has published ten books, including her latest, “Human Tribe,” a book of global portraits celebrating our diversity and visual human tapestry.

Alison has been named a National Geographic Traveler of the Year as someone who travels with a sense of passion and purpose. She is a recipient of the Dorothea Lange Award in Documentary Photography and a two-time winner of the Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Award. Alison was recently awarded “The 2014 Most Compelling Woman in the Travel Industry” by Premier Traveler magazine. Alison has produced ten books and her memoir, “Learning to Breathe; One Woman’s Journey of Spirit and Survival,” chronicles this inspirational story of survival and years of rehabilitation, and her ongoing determination to recover and continue traveling the world as an intrepid photojournalist. This inspired her non-profit Faces of Hope (www.facesofhope.org)– to give back to women and children in the global communities that she photographs.

LOCAL ASSISTING:

Jesus Aranguren V. lives in the Miami area and creates photographs that depict the essence of a people and culture to savor the authenticity of a place. Through his lens, the viewer experiences human realities of individuals around the world that cross the boundaries of language and religion. His ability to relate to people and tell a story while also capturing the spirit of a place are all aspects readily palpable of his portraits.
